Textiles are movable and soft boundaries that envelop us, protect us, warm us, irritate us, and constantly change. Times and stories are always woven into them. The production of textiles is one of humanity’s oldest crafts.

In ancient Greece, life was compared to the weaving of a thread; three Fates were responsible for spinning, measuring, and cutting it with death. Textiles accompany us throughout our lives. Clothing can signify status and express our identity. Traditionally, textile work was a domestic craft practiced by women.
Since clothing became fashion and fashion developed into a trillion-dollar industry, men have increasingly taken center stage as fashion designers. However, behind the scenes, it is still often women who work as seamstresses. The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally harmful industries today, and fast fashion heavily relies on the exploitation of labor and child labor—factors we often overlook in our everyday relationship with textiles.
The exhibition WertStoff sheds light on threads, their different types of entanglement, and the resulting fabric, which always carries a political dimension. It encourages reflection—on lines/surfaces, cuts/connections, closures/openings, and nature/humanity.
