Around 1905, the young generation of artists in France experimented with explosive colors. The horrified public referred to these painters as les fauves, or “wild beasts.” More than any other member of the Fauvists, Vlaminck identified with the attribute of wildness and propagated the image of a modern artist rebel. The exhibition is the first posthumous retrospective devoted to this influential artist of the French avant-garde in a German museum.
