32nd European Heritage Days

The Open Monument Day will be held on September 7 and 8, 2024. Every year on the second weekend in September, monument owners and volunteer monument enthusiasts in Berlin open the doors to architectural, land and garden monuments that are otherwise not generally accessible.

Under this year's motto ‘Witnesses of History’, the importance of monuments as living places of remembrance and active meeting places will be honoured on Open Monument Day.

  • The New Synagogue in Oranienburger Straße, for example, is a monument to history and, through the Centrum Judaicum, a place of remembrance of international significance. The synagogue opens its doors on Sunday with a colourful programme for young and old in German and English.
  • There are special anniversaries to celebrate at other locations in the city. Germany's oldest mosque in the Wilmersdorf district is 100 years old this year and has been restored to its original splendour following extensive renovation work.
  • The Rixdorfer Schmiede was first mentioned in a document in 1624. Even after 400 years, the art of blacksmithing is still practised here.

The programme is accompanied in many places by art, music, small festivals and performances such as the sound installation in the former society building of Ludwig Hoffmann's hospital complex in Pankow.
With a few exceptions, the events are free of charge, but early registration is often requested for guided tours.

In Berlin in 2024, visitors will once again be able to choose their destinations for free tours from more than 300 offers in all districts.

The offer is varied. In addition to guided tours of monuments, the European Heritage Days also include district tours, bus and bicycle tours, cultural events and children's programs.

The German Foundation for Heritage Preservation has been inviting visitors to the Heritage Days on the second weekend in September since 1993. At over 7,500 locations throughout Germany, mostly closed doors open to back rooms / roofs / cellars / courtyards. Private initiatives or volunteers guide up to 5 million participants through our history on this weekend.

We recommend that you study the detailed event overview of the Landesdenkmalamt Berlin in preparation, which will be available on the websites of the Landesdenkmalsamt from August 20243.
