Berlin-based artist Kathrin Linkersdorff is presenting a comprehensive retrospective of her work at Haus am Kleistpark as part of European Photography Month. Her work operates at the intersection of art and science, combining aesthetic poetry with biological research.
The exhibition features works from several series of recent years, including "Wabi Sabi" (2013–2017), "Floriszenzen" (from 2019), and "Fairies" (from 2020), as well as her most recent series, "Microverse" (from 2023).
The focus is primarily on works from the new series "Microverse I, II, and III," including a never-before-seen, wall-sized, four-part work whose composition evokes the impressive vastness of cosmic nebulae and galaxies.
These images were created as part of her artist-in-residence at the Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity" at the Institute of Biology/Microbiology at Humboldt University in Berlin, where she investigates the microscopic processes of soil bacteria during biochemical decay. Her works impressively visualize these invisible cycles of nature.
Linkersdorff's artistic work is deeply inspired by the Japanese "Wabi Sabi" philosophy, which celebrates transience, imperfection, and the beauty in decay. In previous projects, she explored the interplay of growth and decay—particularly in wilting flowers. In her studio, which also serves as a laboratory, she extracts pigments from plants through chemical processes, revealing delicate, otherwise hidden structures.
Her works are not only fascinating documentations of biological processes, but also visual metaphors for transience—a poetic reminder that decay and renewal are inseparable components of life.
