Shops around Bergmannstraße

A vibrant mix of shops & Kreuzberg lifestyle

If you ask Berliners about their favourite promenade in Kreuzberg, most of them will name Bergmannstraße. Here you can browse for hours in small shops for old records, junk, young fashion, vintage fashion and original design.

The unique Kreuzberg lifestyle

The creative mix of old-established and new, of unique traditions and improvised items that often become permanent, is what makes this lively Kreuzberg neighbourhood so special. And so a shopping trip to the so-called Bergmannkiez between Mehringdamm and Südstern is always a tour of the Kreuzberg lifestyle.

Tip: The neighbourhood always celebrates itself on the last weekend in June at the Kreuzberg-Festival (formerly Bergmannstraßenfest) with live music, street food, numerous stalls and good humour.

Crafts, vintage & sustainability

Start your shopping tour in the west on Mehringdamm, which separates Kreuzbergstraße from Bergmannstraße. The neighbourhood welcomes you right here with numerous snack bars, restaurants, bars and cafés. There are also a number of shops such as Love at Second Sight, Checkpoint & Cinema or  the Saxophone Shop. You will quickly realise how lively it is here. Find a spot with a view and let the hustle and bustle pass you by over a coffee or a curry sausage.

Well fortified, you can then start your shopping spree in the small kitchen shop Cucinotto. Here you will find kitchen accessories that are visually appealing. The original spices, oils and vinegars are really flavourful. Diagonally opposite, Herrlich offers a colourful mix of gift ideas for men. And next door, Frau Behrens Torten invites you to take a coffee break.

Continue at Belladonna Naturkosmetik on the left-hand side of the street. The shop to the popular online shop offers plenty of space to look around undisturbed. If you have enough time, sit back and relax here, because at Belladonna you can also book cosmetic treatments with first-class products from Dr. Hauschka, Santa Verde and Annemarie Börlind.

Before you reach the first crossroads, you will enter Sawade. Berlin's oldest praline manufactory has more than 140 years of craftsmanship behind it. And you can taste it: from the special leaf brittle to the traditionally filled truffle praline and stylishly designed vegan chocolate.

In the backyard opposite, you can shop for vintage fashion by weight at Picknweight. Don't hesitate to wander into the side streets from time to time. Right on Nositzstraße, you will find another second-hand boutique, Dress Code Vintage, as well as the Sound Vinyl Store and  on the corner of Gneisenaustraße Marlas Records, a record shop and concept store with a café and bar. Music fans should also not miss Holy's Hit Records on Solmsstraße and Space Hall Record Store on Zossener Straße.

Just behind Nostitzstraße, right on the corner, you will find the Ararat Postkartenladen  on the left with fun little gifts and beautifully designed notebooks.

We love sustainable fashion and are therefore happy to recommend Bananas in Berlin's Bergmannkiez neighbourhood. The jewellery, clothing and accessories as well as all the furnishings are produced fairly in Italy and other countries. Fair fashion and sustainable home accessories from Tranquillo or Chapati Design Berlin impress with strong colours and beautiful patterns.

Boutiques and extraordinary shops can be found close together on Bergmannstraße. The next one is called Perlenmarkt and is located opposite Solmsstraße. Here, the name says it all: beautiful pearls from all over the world, whether glass, stone or metallic, whether made of mother-of-pearl or synthetic resin.

On the corner of Schenkendorfstraße beats the Schwesterherz. Here, finely selected and tested gifts and stationery provide a "quintessence of the most beautiful things", as the Schwesternherzen put it.

A must for all those who like it a little nerdier is Otherland: the shop sells books and invites you to readings and chat sessions - specialising in the genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror. In the same building, the crime bookshop Hammett also tells exciting stories.

And it could go on like this forever, because the Bergmannkiez neighbourhood is a shopping mile like no other - from the toy shop Juno to the Scandinavian boutique Brenøe.

Excursion into the Gründerzeit

Classic Berlin sights can be found elsewhere, but the entire Bergmannkiez is a real feast for the eyes. The restored Gründerzeit facades are one of the reasons why the neighbourhood is so attractive to visitors.

If you walk to Südstern, you will come to the Kirchhöfe Bergmannstraße. The site is home to four cemeteries, which are among the oldest in Berlin. Here, the noise level of the neighbourhood is reduced to a minimum and peace and quiet returns - ideal for taking a deep breath away from the hustle and bustle. In the Friedhofscafé Strauss you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with latte and cheesecake.

Kreuzberger Markthallen

In March 1892, the Marheineke Markthalle opened its doors and sold everything that people needed in everyday life. After the First World War, the huge space also served as a public kitchen before it was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. Fortunately, parts of the original façade can still be found in today's market hall, where you can shop for regional organic products, for example.

If you are going on a shopping trip to the Bergmannkiez neighbourhood on Saturday, the outside area of the market hall is also interesting. Here you will find a classic flea market with art, records, antiques and other typical stalls.

Tip: In Kreuzberg's Wrangel neighbourhood, the historic Markthalle IX invites you to shop and enjoy.

More beautiful shops on Oranienstraße

If you have some time to spare, take a stroll towards the Landwehrkanal. Along Körtestraße, the Spielbrett offers a huge selection of board games. In a former Lindt chocolate shop, you will find second-hand clothes and sustainable fashion at Loveco. The Paul-Lincke-Ufer is home to pretty cafés. And from the end of March, the Nowkoelln Flowmarkt on Maybachufer offers second-hand, art, music and handmade goods. From Böcklerplatz, a green lung leads across Oranienplatz to the Engelbecken with a nice café.

While Bergmannstraße used to belong to Kreuzberg 61 (named after the old postcode) and thus always the quieter part of Kreuzberg, you are now in the wilder Kreuzberg 36. In the meantime, the area around Oranienstraße has also changed. Pubs and bars such as the Würgeengel and the legendary punk club SO36 still characterise Oranienstraße, but in between you'll also find Berlin fashion and more. One corner further on, at Moritzplatz, the hearts of all artists and hobbyists beat faster. The creative centre Aufbauhaus is home to Planet Modulor, which offers a huge selection of artist and designer supplies on several floors.

Food in Bergmannstraße: restaurant or snack bar?

A long shopping spree makes you want culinary delights and hot drinks to warm you up. It's a good thing that Kreuzberg in the Bergmannkiez neighbourhood presents itself from its best side. Only the famous agony of choice makes it difficult to decide where to stop for a bite to eat.

Whether early, at lunchtime or in the evening: Kreuzberg has restaurants where you can enjoy a relaxed meal, there are cafés for sweet moments and snack bars for on the go. The Pas Normal serves French cuisine. At Two Trick Pony or Café Atlantic you can have breakfast, while Knofi will make Turkish cuisine lovers happy. Mrs Behrens cakes and tarts are famous throughout the city. And at Barcomi's you can enjoy home-roasted coffee with freshly baked cakes every day (also vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free).

Curry 36, vegetable kebabs and more can be found directly on Mehringdamm. Sudanese street food is available at Sahara Imbiss - the falafel is particularly recommended.

Asian cuisine in the Bergmannkiez neighbourhood in Berlin

Fans of Asian cuisine will find several attractive restaurants in Bergmannstraße. The rustic, urban Babikyu serves authentic Korean dishes. You can order Vietnamese dishes at Huong Que or Umami right next door. One of our favourite restaurants is Hako Ramen. Here, only fresh ingredients are used and the Japanese soups are prepared in the traditional way - with meat, vegetarian and vegan options. Pure vegan cuisine is served at Good Morning Vietnam. Here you can sit between pretty lanterns in a pretty courtyard.

How to get there: Bergmannkiez is easy to reach

The best way to get to Bergmannstraße is by underground. Take the U6 or U7 line to Mehringdamm - from there you can easily walk. Bus lines M19 and M41 also stop there.
