The successful DSO format will start a new decade together with conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire and the National Youth Choir on Saturday, June 14.

On Saturday, 14 June, Berlin's largest spontaneous orchestra will once again meet on the piazza of the Mall of Berlin for the 11th ›Symphonic Mob‹ of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) to make music together.

Under the direction of British conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire, amateur and professional musicians, young and old, will play and sing works by Edward Elgar, Florence Price, Gustav Mahler, Giacomo Puccini and Ludwig van Beethoven. As a vocal ensemble, the National Youth Choir will be part of the party for the first time.

Under the motto "You play the music!", hundreds of amateur and professional musicians came together for the first time in 2014 in the Weltsaal of the Federal Foreign Office to inspire a large audience. The idea became a successful format, and so Berlin's largest spontaneous orchestra has been regularly formed on the piazza of the Mall of Berlin since 2015. The concept inspires so many people that it is now also organized by other orchestras in numerous cities throughout Europe under the registered umbrella brand ›Symphonic Mob‹ and enables musical encounters between professional ensembles and music-loving amateurs. The original Berlin ›Mob‹ celebrated its tenth anniversary last year with a spectacular birthday edition and 1,000 participants. And in 2025, music enthusiasts of all ages and musical backgrounds are once again invited to make music together with the DSO members.

The programme includes Elgar's 1st March from ›Pomp and Circumstance‹ and Musetta's waltz from Puccini's opera ›La Bohème‹, which are particularly catchy and iconic. Conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire, long-time principal bassoonist in the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin and current music director of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, continues to lead the mass of musicians through excerpts from symphonies by Florence Price and Gustav Mahler. The crowning finale is Beethoven's finale with the final chorus ›An die Freude‹ from his Symphony No. 9 – supported by the National Youth Choir, which is thus part of the ›Symphonic Mob‹ as a vocal partner for the first time.

  • Edward Elgar 1st March from ›Pomp and Circumstance‹
  • Florence Price ›Juba Dance‹ from Symphony No. 1
  • Gustav Mahler Finale from Symphony No. 2
  • Giacomo Puccini Musetta's Waltz from the opera ›La Bohème‹
  • Ludwig van Beethoven finale with the final chorus ›To Joy‹ from Symphony No. 9

For all those who master an instrument or like to sing, the ›Symphonic Mob‹ offers the rare opportunity to perform together with the orchestral professionals of the DSO, regardless of whether they are active in amateur orchestras in everyday life, in a choir or simply at home: everyone can be there! Starting today, Wednesday, February 26, participants have the opportunity to register free of charge and inform themselves about the course of the project at ➔ symphonic-mob.de.

From mid-March, the sheet music of all individual parts will also be available for download in original or simplified form. In the weeks leading up to the ›mob‹, voice rehearsals are offered for individual vocal groups, in which DSO musicians help with rehearsals and give tips on how to cope with difficult passages. Further information on the location and time of the rehearsals can also be found on the project website. The dress rehearsal with Catherine Larsen-Maguire will take place on Saturday, June 14 from 2 p.m. on the piazza of the Mall of Berlin, before the ›Symphonic Mob‹ begins at 3:30 p.m.
