“This is the new tradition, the new culture of Tanzania”. Singeli is the sound of young Dar es Salaam—a hybrid mix of traditional Tanzanian music forms like Taraab and Ngoma, combined with electro-beats pitched up to 300 bpm.

It is extremely danceable, inherently subversive, created for the local community, and as vibrant and complex as Dar es Salaam itself.

Born in Manzese and Tandale, classic working-class neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Singeli narrates everyday stories from its own neighborhood, precarious living conditions, and experiences of violence, while also celebrating ecstasy, solidarity, and self-confidence, distinctly separated from the commercial pop promises of Bongo Flava.

Jay Mitta, Kadilida, Nana and Zai have been stars of the scene for years, and the label Sisso Records has been the epicenter of the steadily growing movement for 15 years. Singeli acts don't use turntables or expensive DJ equipment but craft their sounds directly on computer keyboards, while MCs fire frenzied lyrics in Kiswahili.

The raw, hurried, and high-pitched sound has evolved from a fringe phenomenon to Tanzania's new national musical heritage. Singeli not only dominates local radio stations, clubs, and entire streets in Dar es Salaam but has also been causing a stir at international festivals and clubs for several years. From the Nyege Nyege Festival in Kampala to the Panorama Bar at the CTM Festival, Singeli is increasingly being showcased. Despite DJs and MCs touring globally for several years, the heart of Singeli beats in Dar, and the musicians are primarily focused on expanding and promoting their local creative scene.
