Intervention with August Gaul

Under the motto "Kollwitz meets colleagues", the Käthe Kollwitz Museum is presenting selected works by the sculptor August Gaul, who focussed on animal sculptures, in the permanent exhibition.

Following on from the successful special exhibition "Of all the artists, only you were dear to me like a friend" on the occasion of August Gaul's 150th birthday in 2019/2020, the sculptor's adorable animal sculptures will be shown to a wider public once again.

The exhibited sculptures, together with prints and archive material, have been given to the Kollwitz Museum and archival material, were given to the Kollwitz Museum on permanent loan by Charlotte Hansen-Gaul, the artist's granddaughter.

Born in Großauheim, August Gaul is one of the most important modern artists. The sculptor was closely associated with Käthe Kollwitz sculptor for many years, although their artistic approaches were different. While Gaul became an innovator of German sculpture with his animal figures, Kollwitz was able to establish a new kind of expressive art with her graphic works inspired by the social conditions of the time.

"I don't want to pedantically imitate nature, I want to capture the typical and its emotional core. Above all, I want to make a sculptural work. (...) What attracts me to animals is essentially of an artistic nature. I make animals because they make me happy," explained Gaul in an interview with the publicist Franz Servaes in 1917.
