Bicycle posters from the “Belle Époche”

Free, independent and modern: This was the attitude towards life that the bicycle promised in France around 1900 and so it was advertised there across the board. Lithographic posters served as advertising media. These represent extraordinary works of art. They offer unique insights into the understanding of technology and culture at the time.

Women in particular are the focus of the “Belle Époque” posters as advertising ambassadors – and in very different ways.

The German Museum of Technology is showing over 40 large-format bicycle posters from its own collection from April 24th to December 8th, 2024. The exhibition “Freedom on two wheels.

“The Bicycle on French Posters around 1900” tells of a time in which the bicycle as a modern means of transport and the poster as a new advertising medium entered into a symbiosis. This burst of creativity continues to fascinate today.

The posters are a reflection of social ideals and worldviews around 1900. They show a spectrum of gender roles, technology and culture typical of the time.
