400th anniversary of the microscope
Around April 13, 2025, the Zeiss Planetarium will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the microscope – a groundbreaking invention that, like the telescope, revolutionized our understanding of scientific connections – with the theme days "Invisible Worlds: From the Microcosm to the Universe."
Experience an exciting journey from the microcosm of life to the infinite expanse of the universe through workshops, full-dome programs, lectures, and live performances.
The theme days offer a varied program for all age groups:
During mega-microscopy in the planetarium hall, the Zeiss Planetarium will examine and explain specimens or objects brought in live on the planetarium dome. Here, both school classes and private individuals can explore the world under the microscope up close.
Do you only have a sample but no specimen yet? No problem! In the microscopy workshop "The World in Detail," you can create specimens from your samples under professional guidance. It's worth being quick, as space is limited. With a bit of luck, your specimen will be shown in the dome.
Accompanying experimental workshops in the foyer invite you to learn more about optics, microscopy, and light.
In the planetarium hall, you can immerse yourself in the seemingly invisible world of microorganisms and get to the bottom of the mystery of life in visually impressive 360° fulldome programs:
- The Chemistry of Life
- Karl and Karla in the Microverse
- Mysteries of Life
- Our Blue Planet
- We Are Not Alone
- Dark Biosphere
Other highlights include high-profile lectures by renowned scientists who provide insights into current research and the popular Science Slam, which humorously combines scientific topics and entertainment.
- Microscopic Theater
- Berlin Brains: Division of Labor in the Brain
- Einstein in the Dome: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
- Deep Breath
- Invisible, Visible, Seen Through
- From Handcrafted Experimentation to Scientific Microscope Construction
- Searching for Life in Space
In the foyer, the exhibition "The Virtual Microscope Museum" invites you to marvel, and the immersive LED wall offers spectacular insights into the world of plankton and the origins of life. In the evening, science and art merge in the audiovisual live performance.
Literature enthusiasts will also get their money's worth: Clarissa Corrêa da Silva presents her children's book "My Wonderful Self," which explores the exciting world of epigenetics.
The cinema rounds out the program: Look forward to a thematically coordinated film program, ranging from short films and documentaries to feature films.
Join us and discover the wonders of the microcosm in the universe – a world that arouses curiosity and inspires!
