An interactive installation by Pietro Lugaro and Alessandro Mac-Nelly
ACV (Algorithmic Cultural Vandalism) is an ongoing research project by the artists Pietro Lugaro and Alessandro Mac-Nelly that explores the relationship between symbols and artificial intelligence (AI). Visitors are invited to create a drawing using a robotic arm.
The robot is operated by an AI trained with information from an archive containing a variety of symbols, glyphs, talismans, and scripts from different cultures. Humans and machines create symbols together.
In doing so, the boundary between meaningful signs and mere scribbles is questioned. Ambiguities and the risk of misunderstanding are part of the experience. Interestingly, humans repeatedly attempt to create meaning, even when the AI refuses to do so. In this way, ACV critiques symbol systems.
The artists invite visitors to an intensive exploration of the installation in two workshops on April 5 and 12.
Pietro Lugaro is a research-based artist who explores the philosophy of art, visual culture, diagrammatics, and the connections between magic and technology.
Alessandro Mac-Nelly is an artistically oriented researcher specializing in robotics, machine learning, and AI models in the context of creative processes.
