Texts by Hildegard Knef read by Adelheid Kleineidam

In her rich autobiography “The Gifted Horse”, you can find not only her personal life, but also Berlin theatre and German contemporary history. Hildegard Knef’s strong-willed personality and her gripping, razor-sharp view of people and situations are reflected in her unusual style of writing. The lyrics reveal further facets of her diverse talents and perspectives.

The actress Adelheid Kleineidam combines excerpts from “The Gifted Horse” with a selection of different lyrics that not only “rain red roses” but also show lesser-known aspects of this special life.

Hildegard Knef (December 25, 1925-February 1, 2002) made her first stage appearances as an actress in 1945 in the Tribüne am Ku’damm, later in the Renaissance Theater and the Schlosspark Theater in Steglitz under the direction of Boleslaw Barlog. Film director Wolfgang Staudte saw her here and hired her for the first German post-war film "The Murderers Are Among Us" (1946), which also made Knef internationally famous.

In 1963, Hildegard Knef began her second career as a chanson singer and lyricist. She began writing her autobiography in 1964. "The Gifted Horse" was published in 1970, became a global success and was translated into 17 languages.

"Happiness only lasts for minutes, the rest is waiting." Hildegard Knef
