15 international perspectives

The group exhibition FOUNDATIONS at Haus Kunst Mitte brings together works by 15 international artists from 11 April to 25 July 2025.

Painting, photography, sculpture, video, mixed media and installations will be on display. African-diasporic and African-American positions will be emphasised.

In this way, Haus Kunst Mitte will once again create space for inclusive perspectives on particularities in content, medium and genre and for an examination of different perspectives on elementary and interwoven aspects of life.

The works in the exhibition address the basic building blocks of life in an outstanding and diverse way. They seek answers to the questions: how is life created, how is it perceived and shaped?

Ideas are explored that are fundamental, basic and vital. Some works deal with the development of social concepts such as human rights or the significance of individual and collective history, which are reflected in adult life as a result of childhood experiences. Other works emphasise the cross-generational effects of colonial history.

Other objects emphasise the influence of art history and traditional art forms on contemporary positions. The significance of biological, social and cultural ecosystems and the effects of the smallest changes in our global, cultural, economic, political and ecological systems are also examined.

Sakhile Matlhare and Daniel Hagemeier curated the exhibition in close collaboration with Dr Anna Havemann (Artistic Director Haus Kunst Mitte). Since 2018, Matlhare and Hagemeier have been running the research and gallery space Sakhile&Me in Frankfurt/Main, promoting Black and PoC artists through curated solo exhibitions and collaborative presentations.

Some of the artists in the FOUNDATIONS exhibition experiment with materials such as steel, wood, fabric or self-made bioplastics. They transform these materials and examine historical and philosophical concepts in order to redesign them.
