In the permanent exhibition with Dr. Janina Nentwig, Research Associate, Collection of Fine Arts
"There's an objectivity in the air..." is how the title song of a successful Berlin revue of the 1920s begins. The song sums up the defining attitude to life in the Weimar Republic, which was also reflected in art.
The Mannheim Kunsthalle called its epoch-making exhibition "New Objectivity", which opened in 1925 - exactly 100 years ago. On display were works that stood for a new kind of objectivity. People, things and everyday scenes were captured with a "cool gaze". This applies not least to the Berlin scene, which is presented in this guided tour with highlights from our collection.
