From Patrick Marber
A young woman steps in front of a moving car. A man takes her to the hospital. He is a journalist; she is a stripper. They become a couple—she inspires him to write a novel. A woman visits an aquarium. A man approaches her. He wants to take her to a hotel. After all, they had arranged to meet online for sex. A misunderstanding—one that leads to a marriage.
Set in London, Closer follows the intertwined lives of four characters - Dan, Alice, Anna, and Larry - whose paths repeatedly cross. The play delves into the deep and often contradictory emotions that shape human relationships. Behind their tough exteriors, all four characters hide a profound loneliness. What begins as a yearning for love and recognition turns into a ruthless game - one from which no one emerges victorious.
Closer premiered at the National Theatre in 1997 and won major theater awards, including the Evening Standard Best Comedy Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. In 1999, it made waves on Broadway and has since become a staple of contemporary theater.
