The staged reading of the 1920s Berlin urban novel brings the numerous characters of the successful Berlin novel to life - above all the labourer Franz Biberkopf, who wants to build a new life for himself after his release from prison and initially threatens to sink mercilessly. It is only in an insane asylum that he realises what it takes to start a new life.
