Literature fans from around the world gather in Berlin each year for the African Book Festival, an event that brings the diverse voices of African and Afro-diasporic literature to life. The three-day festival is filled with powerful readings, inspiring performances and an eclectic open-air market showcasing African culture. It's a space for writers, readers and creators to share their stories, exchange ideas and explore the vast and varied literary traditions of the African continent.
Writer and spoken word artist Ivana Akotowaa Ofori is the curator of the next African Book Festival in Berlin, which for the 7th time brings the stars of African literature to the German capital from 18-20 July 2025. Under the caption ‘In Other Wor(l)ds’, this year's festival edition focusses on literature from Ghana.
In 2025 the festival programme will focus on fantasy, horror and sci-fi from Africa. Not only will it do justice to genres which are particularly popular with young readers, but also showcase that African authors do create worlds that go far beyond what German readers are used to.
