Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of ‘Evil Flowers’ and experience how artists from modernism to the present day interpret the dark facets of Baudelaire's aesthetic. The exhibition "Evil Flowers" can be explored from 12 December 2024 to 4 May 2025 at the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection in Berlin. Inspired by Charles Baudelaire's literary milestone "Les Fleurs du Mal" from 1857, the exhibition sheds light on the diverse influences of this work on art.
Aesthetics of the dark and beautiful
Discover how Baudelaire's masterpiece "Les Fleurs du Mal" also influenced the art world and created a new aesthetic of the dark and beautiful. The exhibition offers a journey from modernism to contemporary works and shows the various aspects, effects and after-effects of Baudelaire's work. Evil Flowers picks up on themes such as spleen and depression and the melancholic and depressive themes from Baudelaire's poetry. Themes such as eroticism and intoxication as well as works that seek beauty in the morbid and ephemeral are also part of the exhibition and this development.
Permanent exhibition: Surreal Worlds
The permanent exhibition "Surreal Worlds" in the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection shows the permanent collection in changing presentations. Surrealism takes centre stage. In addition to the main representatives of Surrealism, important precursors and successors of the movement that emerged in Paris in the early 1920s are also on display.
