Music of ancient tribes Oriental Jews

The Louis Lewandowski Festival celebrates its 14th anniversary from 19 to 22 December 2024 and invites music lovers from all over the world to Berlin and Brandenburg.

This year's motto ‘Unknown Voices of Israel - Music of Ancient Tribes of Oriental Jews’ puts the spotlight on the rich sound traditions of Jewish communities in the Middle East and North Africa.
With its unique fusion of liturgical choral music and Oriental melodies, the festival sets a distinctive accent in the cultural landscape.

Artistic director Regina Yantian has put together a high-calibre programme that brings together international ensembles and soloists.

Programme:

Highlights of the festival include the celebrated Atanu Ensemble, which interprets the musical traditions of the Jewish diaspora in the Middle East in both modern and historical forms, and the Yamma Teiman Ensemble, which authentically brings the Yemenite-Jewish singing tradition of women to the stage. The programme is complemented by the singer Jeanette Rotstein Yehudaiyan, who comes from Persia, and the charismatic musician Yair Tzabari, who represents the musical heritage of the Yemenite Jews.

The festival will kick off with an opening concert at the Altes Stadthaus in Cottbus on 18 December. Further highlights at other venues include the Hospital Church in Wuhlgarten, the Reinbeckhallen and the Rykestraße Synagogue, where all the participating artists will come together on one stage for the big final concert on 22 December.
Even before the festival opens, visitors can look forward to a special concert with Dirk Zöllner and band, as well as violinist and singer Shir-Ran Yinon, in the Jewish Community Centre.

With its unique programme, the festival not only sets musical standards, but also sees itself as a cultural symbol of solidarity with Israel and as a contribution to the cultivation and preservation of Jewish traditions. It is supported by funding from the state of Brandenburg and the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.
