Dieter Matthes' diverse work, which spans several decades, shows an impressive range of his themes and visual language. From black-and-white street photography from all over the world to social studies of Berlin locations, such as the Wannsee series and the "Berlin Views," Matthes presents reality in new facets.
In the exhibition METAMORPHOSES OF REALITY, two perspectives enter into an exciting dialogue: the poetic cityscapes and the barcode-like tree trunk signatures. While the repetitive variety of the tree depictions radiates a meditative calm, it is also reminiscent of an orderly labyrinth that invites you to linger and immerse yourself.
Dieter Matthes is deeply connected to Berlin. His works show the city in all its facets: roofs, parks, backyards, train tracks and, again and again, the trees. Through Matthes' color distortions, these often inconspicuous places gain a new symbolism and meaning. The atmospheric mood is reminiscent of Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire, even if Matthes bathes some of the roofs in strong primary colors and distorts the facades in pixel-like fashion.
The Berlin motifs were created over several years, often after Matthes' missions as an emergency doctor. These "cityscapes" were captured unplanned and spontaneously with a smartphone and thus differ from his earlier works. His view transforms the everyday into lively, almost picturesque cityscapes.
One visitor expressed it aptly: “I didn’t know that prefabricated buildings could be so beautiful.”
Dieter Matthes' photographs, in their colorful metamorphosis of the city of Berlin and its trees, invite you to rediscover your own view of familiar things and leave your visual comfort zone.
Curated by the artist Klára Némethy, the exhibition can be seen in the foyer and in two rooms of the former Hotel Haus Leopold at Fischerhüttenstraße 113.
