On the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Förderkreis Reinickendorf is dedicating an event to the war children of 1944/45 with eyewitness reports, video and audio examples.
The main victims in the last months of the war were children, whether in bombed-out Berlin or on the run – as is the case in Ukraine and the Middle East today.
Rumours were still being spread that the Western powers were now allying themselves with Germany against the Soviet Union. The ‘Panzerbär’ – the last Nazi propaganda newspaper – continued to spread the illusion of the ‘final victory’.
The Soviets entered Berlin, fighting their way through the city. Hitler and Goebbels took their own lives. The population of Berlin remained in air-raid shelters until the day of the capitulation. Hundreds of thousands fled from the east or from the Sudetenland and Bohemia.
Their experiences and those of their children were no less dramatic than the end of the war in Berlin, which Alexander Kulpok experienced. This evening, the focus is once again on the experiences of war children. during the downfall and liberation.
