Musical lecture by Steffen Georgi (Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra)
Between 1805 and 1808, the two early Romantic poets Achim von Arnim and Clemens von Brentano published the song collection “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”.
This collection, which includes over 700 songs, inspired the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler to create various musical settings.
His second, third and fourth symphonies contain movements with choral and solo singing, the text of which quotes passages from the “Wunderhornlieder”. In addition, Mahler also explicitly composed orchestral and piano songs that are musical settings of this song cycle. The symphonies mentioned above are known to this day as Mahler's “Wunderhorn Symphonies”.
In his three-part lecture, Steffen Georgi will speak about these monumental orchestral works in spring and autumn 2024 and early 2025.
Steffen Georgi has been a dramaturge and program booklet author at the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra for many years.
