Journey back in time
The Museum of Brandenburg-Prussian History in Potsdam's historical centre is dedicated to 900 years of state history. In the exhibition "Land and People", take a ramble through the everyday lives and social history of people between Kleve and Königsberg. Discover the colourful past of the inhabitants of Brandenburg and Prussia. About 400 exhibits and films, photos and multimedia stations bring you close to the historic and cultural roots of these two inextricably linked states.
Court architect Andreas Ludwig Krüger constructs a horse carriage stall at the Neuer Markt, close to the Stadtschloss (city palace) in 1787-1790. Until 1918, it offers boxes for 100 horses as well as living quarters for their keepers. With the abolition of the monarchy, the premises are used for other purposes - for example as a wholesale operation for fruit, vegetables and potatoes. In 1997, the State of Brandenburg takes over the building with the intention of establishing a regional museum here. In 2003, the Haus der Brandenburgisch-Preußischen Geschichte opens after renovation.
Behold the magnificent early-Classicist facade from the Neuer Markt. Tuscan-style pilasters divide the facade of the royal carriage stalls. The majestic portal is crowned by a Quadriga sculpture in strong contrast to the glass foyer in the courtyard. From here, start your journey of discovery in nine chapters. Walk through the historic vaulted stall building with its high curved ceilings and red sandstone pillars. Glimpse life in this historical atmosphere and discover the importance of the hunters and fishermen in the 18th century. Or sense the spirit of the Prussian residential area of Potsdam in the interactive city model. You can literally stroll through the streets of Potsdam in 1912. Enjoy the exciting literary and artistic productions that have marked the 19th century. Round off your visit with a look at daily life in the GDR. A short interactive presentation informs you about the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and its dramatic consequences. The details of the re-establishment of the State of Brandenburg complete your tour.
After a short walk from the Neuer Markt to the Alter Markt, you stand before the gorgeous Potsdam Museum. This former town hall is dedicated to exploring the history of this town through eleven topics and 500 objects. The permanent exhibition "Potsdam. A City makes History" presents the everyday life and cultural history of the Prussian royal capital. Walk in the footsteps of Frederick the Great, to Sanssouci Palace. The name Sanssouci - without worry - is the leitmotif of the King of Prussia. The stylish, elegant summer residence in the Rococo style is an 18th century original. Enjoy the views of famous vineyard terraces in the popular palace park.
From Berlin, the regional trains RE1 or RE7 go directly to the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof. Alternatively, take the S-Bahn line S7 to the state capital. From here, walk for five minutes or take tram or bus lines to the Alter Markt stop. For car parking near the HBGP, see the Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße. Children and young people up to 18 receive free admission. A Berlin WelcomeCard gives you 50% discount on the entrance fee.
