Where culture meets politics
Democratically based, equitable and socially and critically oriented: This is the leitmotif of the New Society of Fine Arts. It devotes itself to young, international art which is unconventional, surprising and innovative. On the other hand, the society places art within a political framework. It is a platform for communication; reflecting social processes and stimulating new discussions. According to the working principles of the association, an annual general meeting determines the programme of the club. In addition to art exhibitions, nGbK also produces exhibition catalogues and theoretical writings.
When the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst dissolves in 1969, some of its members start the Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst or nGbK. In contrast to the former Art Club, nGbK provides a counter-model, moving away from the previous hierarchical structures to common participation and self-management. Meanwhile, the nGbK belongs to the most important art associations in Germany. With more than 800 members, it is also one the largest organisations in this area. Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg is the seat of the association. It is located in a former safe factory. The social focal point finds direct reverberations in the social processes and works of the nGbK. The rooms located in the backyard are comprised of 400 square metres of exhibition space. 100 square metres are used for panel discussions, performances and other events. In direct contrast to the building, the rooms are state-of-the-art. Grey and white walls convey a cool, but not cold, atmosphere. Spaces are minimal and clear, but also stimulating, without distraction. Everything is focused on the exhibits. It is the optimal setting for contemporary art. Exhibitions are diverse in content, touching on subjects such as the future of work, migration, xenophobia, gender, media criticism and a range of critical approaches. Visit thematic group, monographic and interdisciplinary exhibitions, group projects, performances and exhibitions of digital art. You can also take part in exciting socio-critical discussions.
Only a few minutes' walk from Moritzplatz is a very special experience: enter IMAGO 1:1, the world's only accessible large-format camera. This is not a replica. On the contrary, here you will receive so-called IMAGOgrams - photographic black and white unique pieces in life size (62x200 cm). These single copies are a conscious alternative to the digital photo flood. The IMAGO Camera celebrates the one, magical moment. The art space Kreuzberg/Bethanien is located in the direct vicinity of the nGbK. On Mariannenplatz, this former Deaconess Hospital serves as an exhibition space today. Here you can see more contemporary art which explores social developments. The exhibitions and art projects are often accompanied by discussions, guided tours and educational programmes.
Public transport is advisable due to a lack of parking. Take the underground lines U1 and U8 to Kottbusser Tor. From there, it is only a few minutes walk. Alternatively the bus lines M29 and 140 are recommended. It is an even shorter walk from the Oranienstraße/Adalbertstraße bus stop. Admission is free.
