Hotel am Borsigturm in Reinickendorf
Modern comfort, local recreation and industrial culture
From dense forest and the Tegeler See lake sparkling in the sun to industrial architecture from the 19th century, the northern Berlin district of Reinickendorf has many different facets. Located not far from the eastern shore of Tegeler See, the Hotel am Borsigturm is an ideal starting point for exploring the many faces of the district on foot or by bicycle.
Sleep comfortably between green nature and industrial history
The modern Hotel am Borsigturm can be recognised from afar by its eye-catching, round facade. This makes it an ideal addition to the architectural diversity of the district, which ranges from neo-baroque to post-modern. The stylish and modern rooms of the hotel have fast fibre-optic internet with WLAN and are air-conditioned. In addition, soundproof doors and windows as well as curtains to darken the windows ensure undisturbed sleep between the varied days in the North Berlin neighbourhood. Thanks to the late riser breakfast buffet, you can start the day stress-free. You can also enjoy hot coffee, tea and chocolate specialities at the hotel's free coffee bar. A particularly useful highlight of the hotel is the free bicycle rental outlet: with a city bike rented at the hotel, you can get to a variety of sights in the surrounding area in just 15 minutes, from the bathing beach at Tegeler See to the castle park and the lively shopping street.
Places of interest in the neighbourhood around the Hotel am Borsigturm
The northern Berlin district of Reinickendorf was created in 1920 from six villages that were then incorporated into Greater Berlin. These very different villages brought with them a great variety, from villa neighbourhoods and factory buildings to quiet, green lakeshores. The district of Tegel in particular is traditionally a popular destination for excursions and invites you to spend a relaxing, sunny day in the countryside, especially in summer. The Tegeler See lake is just a short walk away from the Hotel am Borsigturm, where you will find the beautiful Greenwich Promenade with its steamer landing stage and a bright red British telephone box, a gift from the partner municipality of London-Greenwich. A little further north on the banks of the river is Tegel castle park with the Schloss Tegel, built in 1558. The Humboldt brothers spent their childhood in this palace, which is still inhabited today and was remodelled by Schinkel in the 19th century. The extensive Tegeler Forst begins behind it. Here you can marvel at the Dicke Marie, probably the oldest tree in Berlin. There is also a bathing beach on the western shore of Tegeler See, just 15 minutes by bicycle from the hotel. You can also cycle around the entire lake on an extended tour. There is also an unusual attraction in the middle of Tegeler See: nature lovers who have leased the island from the district live here in a self-sufficient island republic. In summer, a ferry travels between the island and the shore, and guided tours are offered through the garden colony.
The district shows a completely different side just a few metres away with its industrial monuments around the former Borsig factories. In the 19th century, the engineering company Borsig was the second-largest supplier of steam locomotives in the world. Directly opposite the hotel, behind a brick and glass facade, you will find the Hallen am Borsigturm, a popular shopping centre. Just south of the hotel is the neo-Gothic Borsigtor, built in 1898, with two bronze figures. This was once the entrance to the Borsig factories. Another more modern architectural feature of the neighbourhood is the Reinickendorf City Library, or Humboldt Library, built in the post-modern style as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in 1987. Other architecturally interesting buildings created as part of the IBA can be discovered on a walk around the old Tegeler Hafen. The Art Park Tegel on the eastern shore of Tegeler See is also worth a visit: large-scale street art artworks adorn entire building facades here. For shopping in the Reinickendorf district, you can either go to the Hallen am Borsigturm or to the vibrant Berliner Straße, where there are numerous shops. Various insider tips are also hidden in the middle of the neighbourhood, such as Lichterglanz Kerzenmanufaktur, which is about 5 minutes by bicycle from the Hotel am Borsigturm.
Eating fish on Tegeler See and other gastronomic highlights
The popular Fishermans fish restaurant, just a short walk from the Hotel am Borsigturm, offers a cosy and elegant atmosphere and fresh fish on the lakeshore. Here, fish from the region and from all over the world takes centre stage. The Trattoria da Silvana & Renato, also close to the hotel, serves authentic Italian cuisine in a family atmosphere. A sweet dessert can then be savoured at Waffle Brothers on Berliner Straße. A little further north, the Tegel Market Hall also offers a wide range of culinary delights: here you can buy fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and cheese. There are also various restaurants in the market hall. However, it is also worth exploring the slightly wider surroundings from the Hotel am Borsigturm. For example, if you cycle to the Waidmannslust district, which is just a few minutes away, the Loci Loft jazz venue awaits you with a stylish ambience, groovy sounds, snacks and cool drinks. There is also a popular flea market every Sunday at Wilhelmsruher Damm, near Wittenau S-Bahn station, where there are numerous treasures to discover.
