"Freedom means everything"

Frank Ebert, Commissioner for the SED Dictatorship in Berlin

Frank Ebert was part of the opposition movement in the GDR and was active in the Zionsgemeinde and Environmental Library . He remembers the vigils and Monday demonstrations of 1989. "It wasn't about German unity," he says. "We were actually concerned - thank God it turned out differently - with the reformability of the GDR." On the night of the fall of the Wall, he travelled along Bornholmer Straße to the West, to freedom. For him, freedom is "simply being able to decide at any time what I want to do for myself personally." Because "freedom means everything, without freedom everything is nothing."
