Display Depot: What to do with problematic monuments?

In the Schaudepot at Spandau Citadel, this tour poses the question: What should we do with controversial sculptures and monuments that were often buried or hidden at the end of World War II?

The idea arose in 2021 with the arrival of "Hitler's Horses," two larger-than-life bronze sculptures (1939) by Josef Thorak. Too large for the exhibition "Unveiled: Berlin and its Monuments," the Bastion Königin was converted into a separate exhibition space.

The Schaudepot now includes other unwanted testimonies to the culture of remembrance, including a marble bust of Hitler discovered in 2023.

The Schaudepot sees itself as an experimental space: Each year, changing curators from the fields of science, art, or education develop new perspectives on the same objects – instead of letting them disappear, their stories are continually retold here.
