Daniel & Geo Fuchs
The gallery nüüd.berlin proudly presents TOYGIANTS, one of the most acclaimed series by internationally renowned artist duo Daniel & Geo Fuchs. The exhibition is complemented by selected works from their latest series Greeks & Romans, creating a compelling dialogue between pop culture and classical antiquity – between the passion of collecting, body culture, and social introspection.
At the heart of the TOYGIANTS series are monumental portraits of iconic figures from pop culture – from Batman and Astro Boy to Godzilla and Andy Warhol. What appear to be innocent toys are elevated by Daniel & Geo Fuchs into powerful, almost reverent character studies. These large-scale, vividly colored photographs explore themes of power, consumption, identity, and memory – raising thought-provoking questions about our collective ideals and projections.
The series originated in 2004, inspired by the discovery of Selim Varol’s internationally significant toy collection. In a purpose-built studio, the artists staged select figures as though they were live models – pushing beyond simple documentation toward a distinct artistic vision. New editions featuring previously unseen figure combinations and the refined presentation in satin-finish acrylic frames underscore the ongoing relevance of the series.
Shown for the first time in Berlin: Greeks & Romans premiered at photo basel in 2024. In this series, Daniel & Geo Fuchs engage with classical Greek and Roman sculptures, transforming them into a contemporary visual language. Through digital editing and color modulation, they offer a fresh perspective on ancient ideals.
These works reflect on current debates around nudity, body standards, and cultural values – raising questions about censorship, representation, and identity in today's society.
Two Series – One Critical Dialogue
Together, TOYGIANTS and Greeks & Romans form a thought-provoking interplay: while one series examines the icons of pop culture, the other revisits classical ideals. Both comment on the ways in which societies create, glorify, and interrogate imagery. The exhibition invites viewers to rediscover familiar symbols and to reconsider their own ways of seeing.
