A Kreuzberg Postcard Collection

In 2023, the FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum received an extensive postcard collection from the estate of Peter Plewka. This includes over 5,600 postcards depicting Kreuzberg from around 1890 to 1945. The majority of the cards show streets, squares, businesses and everyday scenes from the district.

The exhibition is divided into several areas. They devote themselves to the postcards as collectibles, examine their creation and shed light on the social and political backgrounds. In addition, they analyze the motifs of the cards in order to work out which topics and perspectives can be seen and which cannot.

Another part of the exhibition is digital. Master's students in Public History at the Free University of Berlin have created online dossiers that offer thematic insights into the collection. The digital stations also give visitors the opportunity to search the entire postcard collection using keywords, street names and time periods.

This workshop exhibition questions the meaning of collections, which always arise in a social and political context and reflect power relations. It invites visitors to look critically at collections, ask their own questions, research historical images and continually reinterpret and classify them.
