Drama film by Sally El Hosaini, 2022
Yusra Mardini was just 17 years old when war broke out in her home country of Syria in 2015. Together with her sister Sarah, she dared to flee to Germany. Egyptian-Welsh director Sally El Hosaini found striking images for the sisters' real-life escape story in her film "The Swimmers."
The trained swimmers ensured that the overcrowded boat didn't capsize during the perilous journey across the Mediterranean. From Lesbos, they continued along the grueling Balkan route until they arrived at the refugee shelter at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport. Yusra and Sarah – played by Nathalie and Manal Issa – dreamed of competing in the Olympic Games.
They were lucky: Swimming coach Sven Spannekrebs enabled them to continue their training in Berlin. He was portrayed in the film by German actor Matthias Schweighöfer.
Sven Spannekrebs will be present for a follow-up discussion after the screening at Ulme35, where he will also talk about his first trip to Syria with Yusra Mardini.
