Security was central to the state socialist party dictatorships. Everywhere in the Eastern Bloc, the secret police had "security" in their name. But they were not the only actors who were supposed to define and create security. Based on negotiation processes with the ruling state parties and other institutions as well as the self-staging of the secret police, the constructions and practices of security concepts in socialism are examined.



A concluding panel discussion will examine the importance of this research for dealing with the past in the present.
