resurrecting dead darlings - a palindromic process of artistic rebirth - ideas that are put aside, abandoned or otherwise not realised for one reason or another are called dead darlings. in the context of a dance piece, these are scenes, psychophysical movement spaces, performance forms or action sequences based on fictional situations and settings.

the project ‘resurrecting dead darlings - a palindromic process of artistic rebirth’ serves as an artistic archive for the artist duo, revitalising unused ideas in a multi-layered project divided into three phases: incubation, gestation and rebirth.

the artistic process is a dynamic journey, a continuous transformation, an embrace of the unfinished and a platform for creative research that includes the symbiotic relationship and interaction between artist and audience.

a series of different approaches such as manipulation and dissection of a single idea as well as the combination of different artistic impulses and elements are used.

parallel to the artistic process, annamari keskinen and ryan mason are working with a seven-member artistic research collective (arc), which will accompany the entire three-stage artistic process and take part in workshops and discussion rounds.

in the final part of the project, rebirth, which is planned for 2027, the group will share their personal experiences in the form of a performance. what new physical experience will emerge, what will change and, if so, what?

the individual phases of the project will be recorded in an online catalogue, which will be regularly updated with texts, images and videos, allowing the audience to follow the process of artistic rebirth independently of a traditional stage environment. the focus of the project is on the processual nature of an unfinished work, on the essence that drives the final project - regardless of the stage of completion.

in 2024, annamari keskinen and ryan mason, together with sound designer timo tikka, focus on the first phase of the process, the incubation.

a draft of the current work ‘resurrecting dead darlings - a palindromic process of artistic rebirth’ will be presented as a studio showing.

annamari keskinen and Ryan mason founded the dance company thar be dragons in helsinki in 2018 as a platform to create and present their collaborative and personal works. their repertoire ranges from site-specific performances to large-scale stage works, often combining symbolic dramaturgies and expansive auditory landscapes that immerse audiences in rich multi-sensory experiences.

thar be dragons reinterpret the dance experience by focussing on the journey of creation. their approach invites us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the creative process. thar be dragons aim not only to entertain, but to invite us to wonder and question with their performances.
