“hothouse” is conceived as a duet and unfolds in a large plexiglass structure originally designed as a response to the epidemiological hurdles of the pandemic. through the physicality of baye & asa and the original music by julian pratt and harlan steed of the famous punk band show me the body, the enclosed stage becomes a narratively adaptable canvas that transforms into a medical isolation ward, a prison cell, a church and a burning building over the course of the performance.

the piece is intended as a commentary on imprisonment, an exposure and recognition of one of america's larger systemic failures.

baye & asa is a company that develops movement art projects under the direction of amadi “baye” washington and sam “asa” pratt; both have known each other since they were six years old. hip hop and african dance languages are the basis of their technique; These rhythms shape the energetic approach to contemporary dance and theater.

The physical aggression in their joint choreographies is a symptom of political anger and the longing to be personally involved. In their dance works they create political metaphors, question systemic injustices and update ancient allegories, creating theatrical contexts that celebrate, implicate and condemn the characters on stage.
