Claire Cunningham

Inspired by Gustav Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer", her life experience as a disabled person, the memory of her training as a singer and the knowledge of mountaineers and disabled friends, Claire Cunningham sets out to traverse familiar and unfamiliar landscapes.

In her solo, she asks what it means to wander, to strive for great heights. What is it like to learn from those among us who, like four-legged creatures, reach for the ground with crutches?

What does it mean to keep going and, above all, to recognize when the moment is to turn back?

In "Songs of the Wayfarer" by the internationally renowned disabled artist, the personal journey becomes a love song - towards the ground, towards her disabled companions and her own wisdom of Crip* expertise and joy.

"I love transforming myself into a four-legged creature. All the little places where you can squeeze your crutch into a crack or a corner. In Scotland we would say 'nooks and crannies'. I like to lose myself in that kind of game (...) when the ground really (...) becomes my companion.”

*Crip is a political and cultural identity that some disabled people use to describe themselves.
