Jewelry Film Festival

Short films and "reels" inspired by wearable art: how jewellery can speak about topics such as totalitarianism, political persecution, war, environmental destruction and climate change. The video screenings will take place parallel to Berlin Fashion Week from 1 to 5 July 2024 at three locations in Berlin. Admission is free.

Although jewellery is one of the oldest art forms and has been considered an attribute of power, status, value and magic par excellence since the beginning of human civilisation, the role of the art medium as a contemporary tool for political communication, diplomacy and enlightenment, and as an expression and mediator of social values is far too little known to the public.

Through its mobility, jewellery can transcend borders and communicate ideas that no censor can prevent. This function of contemporary jewellery, which can become the immanent carrier of messages in the context of the climate crisis, state surveillance and totalitarianism, the upcoming US elections or the wars in Ukraine and Israel, is the focus of the Berlin screenings.

The international video festival SMCK On Reel presents short films, individual portraits, interviews and documentary film formats on the subject of contemporary jewellery.

The festival, which was founded in 2022, aims to bring jewellery as a social communication medium closer to a broad, open-minded audience and to allow award-winning artists, experts and young designers working in the field of jewellery to have their say with their ideas.

The more than 30 contributors to the SMCK On Reel / Berlin Screenings provide insights into the lives and everyday lives of artists in Ukraine, for example, into personal experiences and experiences with communism during the Cold War, or into the drastically changed living situation in Israel since 7 October.

The selected film programme also portrays the active role of contemporary jewellery authors in a new definition of values in view of the increasing climate crisis. Last but not least, the SMCK On Reel / Berlin screenings bear witness to the will of artists and designers to reinvent themselves through the medium of video and reach a new, interested audience.

The SMCK On Reel / Berlin Screenings will take place parallel to the summer edition of Berlin Fashion Week from 1 to 5 July 2024. The video contributions will be shown in the Arsenal cinema on Potsdamer Platz, in the Noonberlin gallery in Kreuzberg and in the Polykiosk gallery in Berlin-Mitte. Admission to all events is free.
