Lecture & guided tour of: "Elephantine. Island of the Millennia" (special exhibition)

Clay shards (Greek: ostrakon, plural: ostraka) offered a cost-effective alternative to papyrus as a writing material. Clay vessels that were no longer needed or were broken, such as amphorae, vases, or tableware, were usually broken into suitable pieces so that short and concise texts could be written on them.

Most of the tens of thousands of ostraka that have survived contain instructions, short letters, lists and accounts, receipts for tax payments or deliveries, but also school texts and other semi-literary and literary texts. The great importance of these small texts and the treasures that can sometimes be found among them will be demonstrated using an example.
