Discussion series

75 years after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR and 35 years after the Peaceful Revolution, the series invites you to explore past futures.

In 2024, Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. and the Federal Foundation for Coming to terms with the SED Dictatorship under the title “Back to the Future! Visions, Hopes and Awakenings 1949-1989-2024” is a four-part discussion series.

  • What political and social ideas were associated with the moments of awakening in 1949 and 1989? What longings did they awaken among people in East and West?
  • Which predictions have been fulfilled and which have long been outdated?
  • And to what extent do unfulfilled expectations and disappointed hopes shape the present?

In discussion rounds, readings and film evenings, future-oriented answers to today's questions are found with futurologists, contemporary witnesses and experts from society, politics and culture.

  1. 28.5.2024: Remembering the future - yesterday's tomorrow in today's world | Panel discussion
  2. 25 June 2024: Dreaming about the future: young people between hope and fear in a divided and united Germany | Reading with discussion

  4. 17.9.2024: Fighting for the future: protests for ‘tomorrow’ | Film screening of ‘Leipzig in Autumn’ (DEFA documentary film studio, 1989) with discussion
