With attention to detail and a special feeling for light and intense colors, Sam Youkilis shows the longing and lure of travel as well as the beauty of everyday moments.
Born in New York in 1993, the photographer and filmmaker combines his professional travels in the field of commercial fashion photography with the creation of personal works: in short films and video portraits he documents human gestures, emotions, interactions as well as traditional crafts and local customs.
As a pioneer of a new form of visual storytelling, Sam Youkilis uses the iPhone and shares his observations on Instagram, where he prepares them into thematic clusters and shares them with a wide following.
From seemingly everyday scenes, a multi-layered visual archive is created at the intersection of street, travel, food and documentary photography. His works play with familiar tropes of travel, but at the same time refer to universal aspects of human experience.
C/O Berlin presents Sam Youkilis’ first institutional solo exhibition, honoring his innovative approach to translating the everyday into memorable visual narratives.
