In the middle of the desert, three fugitive criminals establish the city of Mahagonny. In this "paradise city," people are supposed to live by their own rules – financed by passing men from the Gold Coast. Eating, loving, boxing, and drinking are the order of the day.
But the idyllic utopia soon begins to falter: natural disasters, excesses, violence, and corruption push the project to its limits.
The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is considered one of the most radical musical theater works of the 20th century, with which librettist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill not only succeed in highlighting the pitfalls of social coexistence, but also questioning the genre of opera itself.
Musically, Kurt Weill bridges the gap between contemporary popular music and operatic tradition. In Barrie Kosky's production, the city of Mahagonny becomes a kaleidoscope of human inadequacy.
