35th Anniversary of the Storming of the Stasi Headquarters

35 years ago, the storming of the Stasi headquarters in Berlin-Lichtenberg marked an important step in the process of the Peaceful Revolution. Thousands of people flocked to the site to end the activities of the secret police and to stop the destruction of the files. This continued a process that began in the districts of the GDR.


With a day of action by the partners on the site of the Stasi headquarters. Campus for Democracy, the events are remembered and their effects on the present are examined.

7 p.m. • “Round tables, citizens’ committees and the democracy of tomorrow”
The panel discussion will focus on the latest historical findings on the Stasi occupation on January 15, 1990 and the democratic negotiation processes since 1990: What has become of the ideas and commitment to democracy and civil rights? Together they want to discuss how citizen participation and democracy have developed since then and what lessons people can learn from this for the future.

This event is a cooperation between the Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive, the Robert Havemann Society, the Citizens' Committee 15 January and the Stasi Museum (ASTAK).


The event is part of the program for 35 years of the Peaceful Revolution.
