The Feuerle Collection is pleased to announce Prélude to Mountain Ghost, a captivating dance performance by Po-Nien Wang. Conceived within Désiré Feuerle’s total work of art, and inspired by the ancient Chinese poem The Mountain Spirit, from Nine Songs by Qu Yuan (343–278 B.C.), this performance explores profound themes of beauty, identity, sexuality, and sensuality.
This site-specific performance is a parallel event to the current temporary exhibition Natural Beauty. Curated Nature by Désiré Feuerle at the Silk Room of The Feuerle Collection, which addresses the subject of inspiration coming from the meditative and sensual beauty of natural objects and environments.
Set within the richly evocative environment of The Feuerle Collection, Prélude to Mountain Ghost is surrounded by Imperial Chinese furniture and contemporary photographic works by Nobuyoshi Araki and Adam Fuss. The setting profoundly enhances and inspires the work, reflecting the collection’s belief in the seamless interplay between past, present, and future, and abolishing barriers between different art disciplines and cultures.
As an integral part of the piece, tea practitioner Lin Wang, who co-curated The Feuerle Collection Tea Ceremony with Désiré Feuerle, will perform a Gongfu Cha tea ceremony as an opening act. After the show, the audience will be offered her naturally brewed Ancient Tree White Tea, harvested in Spring 2023 from the Wuliang Mountain in Yunnan, a region renowned for its tea, cultivated at an elevation of 1800 to 2000 meters. This delicate tea will be accompanied by golden osmanthus flowers, adding a subtle, wintery fragrance to the experience. The inclusion of tea tasting, alongside the visual and musical aspects of the performance, reflects the synesthetic, multisensory, and interdisciplinary approach of The Feuerle Collection to its cultural program.
The audience will be standing and will be able to move around the space during the performance, as a reference to the typical visit to the permanent collection, underlining the equal, same-level, insertion of disciplines like dance and tea practice into the immanent total art work that has been created by Désiré Feuerle.
Berlin-based choreographer Po-Nien Wang began his ballet training at eleven in Taipei, Taiwan. His education at SUNY Purchase and Taipei National University of the Arts, along with his tenure as a solo dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, has shaped his unique approach that blends classical ballet, contemporary dance, Chinese opera, and martial arts.
Prélude to Mountain Ghost continues the series of performances initiated in 2023, establishing the first dedicated platform for young Asian performing artists based in Berlin. It follows the debut of Ryukyuan dance performances by artist Riko Sugama, musicians Ayane Kondo and Hoshiko Yamane, calligrapher Sugano Matsusaki, and dancer-choreographer Motoya Kondo.
