East German Views on Revolution and Unity from the West

For decades, dissidents suffered in the SED dictatorship, were undermined, persecuted and imprisoned. Some managed to find their way to freedom even before the end of the GDR. Their perspectives on the peaceful revolution and the process of reunification are the focus of the event.

How did they experience it when citizens in the GDR fought for freedom and democracy, elected the last People's Chamber of the GDR on March 18, 1990 and the path to German unity was paved? Did they return and get involved? Were they disappointed or did they welcome the developments? How did their first encounters with former companions go? How do they remember dealing with those who had worked for or supported the dictatorship's repressive apparatus? These and other experiences from the other side of the wall will be discussed with the panel guests.
