The workshop in German Sign Language (DGS) is based on the exhibition ‘Rineke Dijkstra. Still - Moving. Portraits 1992 - 2024’.

The Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra (b. 1959) is deeply interested in transitional phases of life, such as the change from childhood to young adulthood. Inspired by this theme, experiences and perspectives within the deaf community are explored.

The focus is on the role of sign languages, in particular German Sign Language (DGS), in the formation of identity, as well as personal experiences – whether in a hearing or deaf environment, with or without a connection to deaf culture. There is an open discussion of topics such as audism, language deprivation and other moving aspects.

After an introduction to the exhibition and the technical basics of photography, there will be an opportunity to create your own portraits and self-portraits – experimental, creative and individual.

  • The workshop will be conducted in DGS and is aimed at deaf young adults aged 18 and over.
Workshop leader:

  • Xenia Dürr, queer, deaf, white – activist and photographer, currently a student at the UdK, MA ‘Art in Context’.

Please bring:

  • Your own camera and/or smartphone (a reflex camera and some iPads will also be available on site).
  • Pieces of clothing and accessories that reflect your personality or have played an important role in the development of your identity.
  • Food and drinks (alternatively, there are catering options in the museum café or in the surrounding area).
