The Grünstraße Gallery is presenting an extraordinary exhibition: under the title ‘Don't make a fuss’, renowned costume designer Prof. Heidi Brambach is showing a selection of her work. In Alt-Köpenick, visitors can get a glimpse of her impressive work in stage and costume design.
A glance at Heidi Brambach's CV reveals a varied and successful career:
After training as a make-up artist and then studying stage design at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, she worked as a stage and costume designer at the Volksbühne Berlin from 1974 to 1984.
Since 1984, she has been working as a freelance artist, with engagements at renowned theatres worldwide, including the Schauspielhaus Cologne, the Berliner Ensemble and stages in Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and India. Finland was particularly formative for her, where she not only worked at leading theatres but also taught at the Theatre Academy and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
Further stages in her career led her to the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Schauspielhaus Graz and finally back to Berlin, where she has been working as a professor of stage design at the Weißensee Academy of Art since 1993. Today Heidi Brambach lives and works as a freelance artist in Berlin and Glücksburg/Sachsen-Anhalt.
Her designs for theatre costumes and stage sets will be on display at the exhibition at Galerie Grünstraße.
She sees her artistic work as an intensive examination of each piece – inspired by the visual art of the respective epoch and current art movements. Her costume designs are characterised by a painterly handwriting that often leads to stylised exaggerations and experimental costume adaptations. Make-up also plays an important role: distinctive facial features are emphasised and characters are given more depth through targeted make-up, plastic alterations or attachable masks.
- At the opening reception on 3 April at 7:30 p.m., actor Martin Brambach will give a speech in honour of his mother.
