Award-winning ideas

For over a decade, the RecyclingDesign Award has been honouring creative approaches that turn supposed waste into new, functional and aesthetic objects. It is also considered one of the most important platforms for sustainable, innovative design.

This year's open call for the 11th edition of the competition, with over 400 international submissions, also impressively demonstrates how recycling and upcycling are establishing themselves as key strategies for resource-efficient design.

At the same time, it shows that sustainability is also a design challenge, ranging from the development of new types of furniture or everyday objects to experimental fashion designs and extraordinary material research.
Above all, the interdisciplinary character characterises the award-winning and nominated contributions:
the award winners combine craftsmanship with technological know-how, innovation and economic feasibility, thereby questioning current consumption patterns.

As this year's special prize illustrates, recycling can not only be a solution to environmental problems, but can also prove to be an artistic and social process.
The designs and ideas presented encourage us to rethink the value of resources and to see design as a driving force for social change – not only by showing sustainable alternatives, but also by opening up new perspectives for shaping our environment.

The artist and designer Oliver Schübbe created a sustainable installation for the exhibition especially for the presentation of the four prizewinners and the 23 nominated ideas.
