The six sonatas for organ

Gerhard Oppelt plays the six sonatas for organ by J. S. Bach on the organ of the Lehnin monastery church. Composed between 1727 and 1732, the pieces are said to have served as teaching materials for J. S. Bach's gifted children.

The pieces, also known as “trio sonatas,” are considered to be perfectly structured. Two independent manual works, together with the obligatory pedal work, activate all of the players' mental and organizational potential.

Refined motifs, counter-arranged timbres and complex hand-foot coordination are trained as if in an etude, making them the most demanding works for organ.

The small, chamber music organ in the Lehnin monastery church is particularly suitable for these organ compositions. The audience sits close to the instrument, allowing articulation, vocal progressions and temperaments to be experienced up close.
