Last Dance | And for the time being is a collaboration between performer, movement director and fashion designer Stéphane Peeps Moun and choreographer, film maker and performer Ian Kaler. The idea for the piece originates from Peeps’ wish to work on a solo that will be his last performance as a dancer on stage. It is dedicated to his mother who will see Peeps perform live on stage for the first time.

Last Dance | And for the time being is born out of a longstanding exchange between Peeps and Ian, reflecting on growth, artistic practices and contexts, friendship and (chosen) family as a form of complicity and kinship. In the process of working on the piece these questions and reflections are further developed with a team of long-term collaborators in a shared cross-disciplinary and transmedial approach.

The piece consists of two parts that explore autobiography as a part of the choreographic setting. Last Dance develops alongside an intimate conversation in Lemandais and French between Peeps and his mother Martine, sketching out an audio-narration of images, memories and songs that are interwoven into the soundtrack by music producer rRoxymore.

Peeps who doesn’t actively speak Lemandais but understands the essentials of his mothers first language, explores his own relationship to Lemandais as „a voice over of my mother tongue“. „Cameroon is an old German then French colony, so maybe something there develops as a reappropriation of words, spaces, the body/ies.” (Peeps)

And for the time being explores non-/verbal storytelling and the construction of a (stage) character through embodiment. Combining elements from his practice in contemporary dance and more narrative, video-based works Kaler stages a dreamlike encounter with a horse as his scene partner and fictional alter ego (Cinematography: Diara Sow, Editing: Dafne Narvaez Berlfein). His solo explores „creative captions“ in adapting open captions and subtitles producing a parallel narration to the performance on stage.

The piece is developed in exchange with access dramaturge Dorothée de Place. Set designer and visual artist Stephanie Rauch develops the set as a landscape setting that embeds this intimate piece.
