Documentary in Flux
Julian Rosefeldt is one of the most important and internationally renowned media artists of our time. With his elaborately staged film and video installations, he transforms museum spaces, theaters, opera houses, cinemas and post-industrial locations into impressive settings for his art. His 13-channel film installation Manifesto with actress Cate Blanchett, which has won several awards, attracted worldwide attention.
With Nothing is Original, C/O Berlin is presenting a comprehensive overview of Rosefeldt's work over the last 30 years and is thus showing the artist's first major retrospective in Berlin. The exhibition traces the artist's career - from his studies in architecture to early photo reports and work in the theater to the development of his characteristic cinematic fictions.
Central themes of his works, such as the appropriation of archive material and found footage, the deconstruction of media stereotypes and visual tropes or quoting from cultural and film history, are just as much in focus as his critical examination of national myths and the absurdities of human existence.
In addition to his elaborate multi-channel projections, previously unpublished photographs and accompanying materials provide insights into the creation processes of his works. They not only illuminate the artist's socially critical reflections, but also make the mechanisms of narrative and film genre construction tangible.
