Don't be fooled by the playful title of his new album, POPtical Illusion: John Cale remains furious about the destruction wreaked by capitalism and fraud. He'll be touring Germany with the new album in April.
John Cale - POPtical Illusion
In songs like "Company Commander," John Cale hurls biting lines against right-wing ideologies, underscored by chaotic rhythms and droning sounds. The album connects emotionally to his acclaimed 2023 album, "MERCY."
Instead of prominent guests, this time he ventures solo through sonic labyrinths of synthesizers, samples, and piano. POPtical Illusion is permeated with dark hope and a belief in change. It was produced together with Nita Scott in Los Angeles.
For over 60 years, Cale has shaped music history – from the drone experiments of his early days to The Velvet Underground and solo milestones like "Fear" and "Slow Dazzle." With POPtical Illusion he proves once again: He is still in tune with the times.
