Literature wants to be discovered
On this year's International Museum Day, the Mitte Museum Library will be the focus of events and invites you to discover literature in a variety of ways.
10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
The Museum Library
The Mitte Museum Library is tasked with collecting and preserving literary works that deal with the Mitte district. Often, it is the protagonists who, as writers or those described, engage with this urban space. It is usually the subject-specific context that leads a literary work to become part of the library's collection.
The Mitte Museum invites you to get to know the museum library better and discover the possibilities for using it as well as some of the special features of its collection. The category of memorial literature is of interest here. This includes some unpublished works, so-called ego documents from contemporary witnesses themselves. Here, the focus is less on literary ability, but rather on the writers' desire to pass on their memories.
The museum also encourages participants to donate their own memoirs to the museum library, whether they be personal accounts, essays, diaries, or manuscripts.
2 p.m.
Reading and Dialogue: Focus on Memoirs
In her reading, actress Julia Meier will explore this memoir, which connects individual fates with the collective experience of war. Using six literary works from the museum library that recount diverse experiences of the war—from the front lines, fighting underground, fleeing to Switzerland, to childhood memories in Berlin tenements—the reading highlights how the war was experienced as a personal and societal experience. These are the memories that often only demand to be relived and recounted decades later.
At the end of the reading, the audience is invited to engage in a dialogue and share their own memories.
12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Guided Tour of the Permanent Exhibition: "Grown on Sand"
Art historian Andrea Aranda leads a tour of the museum's themed rooms, which present well-known and lesser-known aspects of the past and present of the Mitte district.
